AK question

Anybody ever shoot an AK with a peep sight?

Re: AK question

Yes, it is similar to playing an FPS which tries to simulate recoil with the view blowing back and upwards. As the sights start to drop your eyes are frantically waiting for the target to reappear and align. Once you find the timing of the recoil and your return muzzle drop you can pull the trigger accordingly and pepper a target rapidly. The FP view is basically a quick appearance and disappearance of the target because as soon as you see and align the trigger gets pulled and the FP view goes to where it will spend the majority of the time; bobbing up and down at the pretty treeline.
As with anything the more proficient the quicker you can place shots.
Note, my cheek would be very near the stock when firing using a peep sight.

OK maybe I should have been clearer. I'm very familiar with peep sights and like them. The AK 47 though doesn't come with them. Have you specifically shot the AK with peeps and what did you think. I agree with Mountainman that very few changes are needed for this rifle.

The big problem I see is that the peep on an AK would be mounted farther forward, which is not usual for peep sights. I am wondering if anyone has fired one in this configuration. What did you think?

I have heard of a peep sight that mounts on the frame in the back, increasing sight radius which is good. But it takes a redsigned top cover and probably cost a bunch.

Re: AK question

Consider a 'Ghost Ring' sight. Similar to 'peep' sights. BUT made for shotguns.

Not so much 'up and down' as it were. Besides, peep sights are made for tight groups. Not that a correctly built AK won't do them, but they are made for 'minute of man'. SO the ability to hit a man sized target at 100 yards is probably increased somewhat.

But with a ghost ring sight, you will have a much larger area to look through. Again, it can never be said enough, 'Practice, practice, practice'.

There were a few companies modifying AK's with Galil sights. They mount the rear sight on the receiver cover. It looked nice.
